Happy 2019! It’s a new year and I know so many entrepreneurs and business owners, myself included, are ready to take themselves and their businesses to the next level. And for so many it means it’s time to get new headshots or take the leap and have personal branding images done. But for many of us the thought of having photos taken makes us cringe. I’m not photogenic. I need to lose weight or get my hair colored first. I don’t have anything to wear. I don’t even know what kind of photos I need. All of these are reasons and excuses for being afraid to step outside our comfort zones.
First let’s define that comfort zone. Our comfort zone is where we feel safe and where don’t have to open up and be vulnerable. Our comfort zone is where we tell ourselves, I can’t do that because … insert one of those reasons from above. Our comfort zone is where we think we feel at ease and are without stress. But, the comfort zone keeps us where we are. The comfort zone is often built upon fear. Fear of rejection, fear of failure, fear of success, you name it. And here’s the thing. That fear actually creates ongoing, underlying stress and anxiety. It doesn’t feel like the same kind of stress and anxiety when say we have big deadline coming up or if say we’re in scary fight or flight situation but it does the same thing to the body. So ultimately, we need to find ways to overcome the fear and step outside our comfort zones.
Believe me, I know how uncomfortable it can be to have photos taken. I have had photos done specifically to walk in my client’s shoes. And in that process I learned a lot about what I, as a photographer, can do to make the whole process less uncomfortable and a lot of fun. That said, there are also some things you can do, as well, to make stepping outside your comfort zone and having a photo shoot a little easier. And I’m going to share some tips with you today!
Start getting comfortable in that uncomfortable space.
Do some small things that make you feel slightly uncomfortable. As related to photos, start by taking some selfies or have a friend take a few photos on their phone and post them to your social media. You might be amazed at the support and results! People love seeing us, the business owner. People want to visually connect with us. This will also help you to practice for your photo shoot!
Compare the worst and best outcomes.
If the thought of having a photo shoot makes you want to retreat even further into your comfort zone ask yourself what’s the worst that can happen? You won’t die, that’s for sure. It’s just a photo shoot! The worst that can happen is you may not get photos that you love. But if you pick and connect with the right photographer and prepare for your session, I’m confident that won’t happen. What’s the best that can happen? You get amazing photos that will empower you and prove that the comfort zone was really your fear trying to keep you stuck! You get images that help boost your business and with a potential end result of more money!
Prepare for your photo shoot.
Being prepared helps us feel in control. When we feel in control those scary things (that really in the big scheme aren’t that scary) become diminished. Have your hair and makeup done, shop for clothes that fit well and make you feel amazing, and spend some time really thinking about how you want to be seen.
Fake it til you make it!
I’ve heard this from so many of my teachers and mentors over the years. If you’ve tried telling yourself I’m a rockstar or I’m super confident and it’s still not sinking in, then approach it like someone you know that would walk in like a rockstar with confidence. If they can do it, you can too. Just think, you might even have fun!!
It’s ok to play big and shine bright.
Sometimes that comfort zone gives us that whole “who do I think I am to do this” feeling or who am I to be in the spotlight like this or I can’t play big like this. Here’s the thing though, when you do play big, shine bright and put yourself out there, you inspire others to do the same. Imagine being a source of inspiration like that!
Hope these tips help! Have you recently stepped outside your comfort zone recently whether with a photo shoot or something else? If so, I’d love to hear about it. And by the way, I’m stepping outside my comfort zone to share this with you! And will continue to do so with more posts like this. So we’re in this together!
